Big Girl uses observational stand-up comedy, self-penned spoken word poetry and movement to evoke various feelings from her audiences to build a relationship – a friendship. Emily interacts with her audiences like a stand-up comedian would but to share relatable moments in growing up as well as comment on social and political observations; creating a friendly, warm, embracing atmosphere at the same time.
Emily’s stand-up is interrupted by her spoken word poetry at various intervals. This is where Emily’s words emote poignancy, power and positivity.
Audiences have likened this to ‘being welcomed in for a chat by a family member or close friend’. Other audience comments describe ‘the rollercoaster of emotions Big Girl makes you feel. Emily is incredibly funny but her frank and brutal observations of society hit home and make her so genuine, making Big Girl a pleasure to watch and be a part of.’
Big Girl is influenced by the freedom Emily had, whilst at Plymouth Conservatoire, to explore herself: her working class background, her appearance, her sexuality and what they all mean to her and to society. This made Big Girl a platform to say thank you to the good times, the positive times and stick a middle finger up at the negative times. But, after recently reworking Big Girl, Emily has come to realise actually all those times have made her the person she is today.
Big Girl was developed through the support of Theatre Royal Plymouth’s Talent Development Scheme.

Holly Firmin –
Emily Jane Rooney has managed to adapt Big Girl for the sofa without losing any of its charm. This show is hilarious, politically insightful and intimate — like a nice cup of tea at the end of a hard day. Can’t wait to see Emily back on the stage again!
