Stingaree is a new experimental ALTERNATIVE TO ALTERNATIVE ever-changing, international platform for artistic, counter- culture collaborations. We aim to dissemble mainstream popular art and challenge the status quo.
STORMY THE OPERA is specially written by award-winning writer Kay Adshead for veteran Houston performers jhon r. stronks, Margo Stutts Toombs, and herself, the three main players. It uses the life and times of burlesque queen, Miss Stormy, as a conduit to explore America’s turbulent present and its possibly terrifying and divided future. There are three Stormys in our piece: Stormy Heart, Stormy Mind, and Stormy Soul (but crucially only one spotlight!). They tell the story of America’s battle against Otherness, with puppets, verse, music, dance, and HUMOUR.
This project was awarded funding by Houston Arts Alliance to tour venues in Houston, Texas in 2020, Covid19 rendered this impossible. It was reimagined as a bricolage live streaming on You Tube on October 3 2020, and has landed on STINGFLIX You Tube channel.
Audience reviews: “. a rich, sensual melting pot…an attempt to realise the grotesqueries alongside the wondrous possibilities defining America and all so apposite right now. There are times when the language is so, so moving and captures with such vulnerable, raw honesty the state of that nation”. Ruth Jones “Brilliantly written and conceived, and beautifully performed by this trio. The concept of a bricolage (new to me) in the wake of their postponed tour was genius! Love the images, the music, the whole weird ****ing world they conjure up, the scary possibilities. All I can say is VOTE! VOTE! VOTE!” Elizabeth J Fels (all the way from New Zealand!)“Watched it for 15 minutes thinking WTF, then penny dropped, searing political theatre cunningly disguised. Watch it to the end, made me cry!” Danni Kelsall “A propera-opera! Amazingly assured and well put together…. Touch of People Show/Warhol/Kate Tempest in there, and very current” Cecily Hobbs
