1914-18 remembered in words and music – a Great War revue
Created by Kent based professional company Katapult in the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 and performed continuously ever since, this show takes the audience on a journey through the experience of the conflict through songs, poetry, readings and drama. It tells the stories of some of the women who became nurses, bus drivers, factory workers or entertainers, as well as reflecting on the experience for combatants and civilians.
Tipperary to Flanders Fields is funny, entertaining and full of information about the lives of the people whose work is included in the show. But it also aims to thought provoking and moving, adding a deeper understanding of war and its consequences. The performance now includes original film footage of the Battle of the Somme in 1916.
Many of the songs of that period continued to be popular for a long time and the audience will have the chance to join in on some of the choruses. In fact the music in the show is very wide ranging, going from the English composer Henry Purcell via Victorian Music Hall favourites to the American Irving Berlin.
