The year is 1895. Agnes Ebbsmith, a socialist and proto-feminist, and Lucas Cleeve, a defecting young Tory whom she has nursed back to health after a breakdown, are staying in Venice, planning a new kind of partnership. But how long will their relationship last when Lucas’ uncle tries to tempt him back to his wife and his old life of luxury?
