An experimental project during lockdown in Summer 2020, by members of Actors and Writers London, based on Paddy Gormley’s translation and adaption of Moliere’s Le Bourgeois gentilhomme.
Directed online by Anthony Shrubsall, actors were invited to become aware of basic self filming techniques from their own equipment such as mobile phones, in order to submit footage for compilation in the video.
Dorante, a count, hopes to marry the widowed marquise, Dorimène. Jourdain – The Social Climber – longs to have Dorimène as his mistress. Dorante funds his extravagant courtship by borrowing money from Jourdain, while pretending to act as a go-between on Jourdain’s behalf. Jourdain has ordered his wife to visit her sister, so that he may host a secret dinner party for Dorimène.
We join Jourdain as he plans the dinner party and hopes to persuade Dorimène to spend the night with him. Then the guests arrive. The wine flows freely, and all goes well until Madame Jourdain makes a surprise entrance, and takes great delight in breaking up the party, humiliating her husband, and sending the guests packing.
